This picture of DeCoster was taken close to the top of the biggest uphill.  It was extremely steep and the crowd would peer over to watch in this very fast section.

Kent Howerton had removed his goggles and face mask like many of the other riders by late in the motos. 

Motocross is much more physically demanding than most people realize.  After the final moto Brad Lackey is oblivious to the crowds pouring into the pits.
